    Modelling of strengthened connections for large span truss structures

    Because of its large ratio between strength and weight timber is a material very suitable for large span structures. For large spans of more than about 30 m, usually truss structures are adopted. The problem of large span timber truss structures are the expansive and complex nodes that have to be adopted, normally single or multiple slotted-in steel plates in combination with a number of dowels. In order to find a more efficient and economical solution for timber nodes, a novel truss node has been developed at SP-Trätek in Borås. The node consists of a single large- diameter dowel which connects the diagonals with the chords. Additionally, self-tapping reinforcing screws are applied to prevent premature splitting failure and also to increase the strength and the stiffness of the node. In the course of this thesis a full-scale test series was carried out to investigate the behaviour of the node. 15 glulam specimens with reinforced single large-diameter dowel connections were tested in load controlled tensile tests. Besides various configurations of self-tapping screws also lateral prestressing was used as a reinforcement measure. It was found that the bearing capacity of the connection can be significantly increased by applying self-tapping screws. Reinforcing screws effectively impede splitting of the timber if placed near the loaded end of the connection, where major lateral deformations occur. However, reinforcing screws cannot prevent the formation of a shear plug, which was observed to be the ultimate failure mode. Lateral prestressing of the connection also proved to be an effective reinforcement measure, as splitting can be prevented completely. By applying large lateral prestresses the failure mode changes to a combined shear and tensile failure which results in a higher bearing capacity

    Regression tree construction by bootstrap: Model search for DRG-systems applied to Austrian health-data

    Background. DRG-systems are used to allocate resources fairly to hospitals based on their performance. Statistically, this allocation is based on simple rules that can be modeled with regression trees. However, the resulting models often have to be adjusted manually to be medically reasonable and ethical. Methods. Despite the possibility of manual, performance degenerating adaptations of the original model, alternative trees are systematically searched. The bootstrap-based method bumping is used to build diverse and accurate regression tree models for DRG-systems. A two-step model selection approach is proposed. First, a reasonable model complexity is chosen, based on statistical, medical and economical considerations. Second, a medically meaningful and accurate model is selected. An analysis of 8 data-sets from Austrian DRG-data is conducted and evaluated based on the possibility to produce diverse and accurate models for predefined tree complexities. Results. The best bootstrap-based trees offer increased predictive accuracy compared to the trees built by the CART algorithm. The analysis demonstrates that even for very small tree sizes, diverse models can be constructed being equally or even more accurate than the single model built by the standard CART algorithm. Conclusions. Bumping is a powerful tool to construct diverse and accurate regression trees, to be used as candidate models for DRG-systems.     Modelling the impact of the AN-ACC in Australia.The Resource Utilisation and Classification Study: Report 4

    A national study to develop a new methodology for determining appropriate funding for places in residential aged care homes, the ‘Resource Utilisation and Classification Study’ (RUCS), was commissioned by the Commonwealth Department of Health (the Department) in August 2017 and undertaken by the Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI) at the University of Wollongong. This report is the fourth in a series, written to present the results of this important national study. Each report deals with a different aspect of the project, as described in Appendix 1. In this report, Report 4, the findings from Study Three of the RUCS are presented. The purpose of the casemix profiling study covered in this report was to develop a national casemix profile of residents in residential aged care facilities in Australia, to identify any differences in resident casemix by facility type (i.e. by location, ownership type and size), and to model and test the likely financial impact of implementing the blended payment model nationally. To do so, a nationally representative sample was used to model patterns of resident need and to investigate the funding implications of a new payment model based on resident casemix

    Colour reconnection in e+e- -> W+W- at sqrt(s) = 189 - 209 GeV

    The effects of the final state interaction phenomenon known as colour reconnection are investigated at centre-of-mass energies in the range sqrt(s) ~ 189-209 GeV using the OPAL detector at LEP. Colour reconnection is expected to affect observables based on charged particles in hadronic decays of W+W-. Measurements of inclusive charged particle multiplicities, and of their angular distribution with respect to the four jet axes of the events, are used to test models of colour reconnection. The data are found to exclude extreme scenarios of the Sjostrand-Khoze Type I (SK-I) model and are compatible with other models, both with and without colour reconnection effects. In the context of the SK-I model, the best agreement with data is obtained for a reconnection probability of 37%. Assuming no colour reconnection, the charged particle multiplicity in hadronically decaying W bosons is measured to be (nqqch) = 19.38+-0.05(stat.)+-0.08 (syst.).Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, Submitted to Euro.     Search for R-Parity Violating Decays of Scalar Fermions at LEP

    A search for pair-produced scalar fermions under the assumption that R-parity is not conserved has been performed using data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP. The data samples analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 610 pb-1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) 189-209 GeV. An important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric particle is expected to be unstable. Searches of R-parity violating decays of charged sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks have been performed under the assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly and that only one of the R-parity violating couplings is dominant for each of the decay modes considered. Such processes would yield final states consisting of leptons, jets, or both with or without missing energy. No significant single-like excess of events has been observed with respect to the Standard Model expectations. Limits on the production cross- section of scalar fermions in R-parity violating scenarios are obtained. Constraints on the supersymmetric particle masses are also presented in an R-parity violating framework analogous to the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.Comment: 51 pages, 24 figures, Submitted to Eur.     Measurement of the Hadronic Photon Structure Function F_2^gamma at LEP2

    The hadronic structure function of the photon F_2^gamma is measured as a function of Bjorken x and of the factorisation scale Q^2 using data taken by the OPAL detector at LEP. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of F_2^gamma are extended to an average Q^2 of 767 GeV^2. The Q^2 evolution of F_2^gamma is studied for average Q^2 between 11.9 and 1051 GeV^2. As predicted by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F_2^gamma. Several parameterisations of F_2^gamma are in agreement with the measurements whereas the quark-parton model prediction fails to describe the data.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of Photon 2001, Ascona, Switzerlan

    Search for the Standard Model Higgs Boson with the OPAL Detector at LEP

    This paper summarises the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson in e+e- collisions at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV performed by the OPAL Collaboration at LEP. The consistency of the data with the background hypothesis and various Higgs boson mass hypotheses is examined. No indication of a signal is found in the data and a lower bound of 112.7GeV/C^2 is obtained on the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson at the 95% CL.Comment: 51 pages, 21 figure

    Search for Higgs Bosons in e+e- Collisions at 183 GeV

    The data collected by the OPAL experiment at sqrts=183 GeV were used to search for Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Standard Model and various extensions, such as general models with two Higgs field doublets and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of approximately 54pb-1. None of the searches for neutral and charged Higgs bosons have revealed an excess of events beyond the expected background. This negative outcome, in combination with similar results from searches at lower energies, leads to new limits for the Higgs boson masses and other model parameters. In particular, the 95% confidence level lower limit for the mass of the Standard Model Higgs boson is 88.3 GeV. Charged Higgs bosons can be excluded for masses up to 59.5 GeV. In the MSSM, mh > 70.5 GeV and mA > 72.0 GeV are obtained for tan{beta}>1, no and maximal scalar top mixing and soft SUSY-breaking masses of 1 TeV. The range 0.8 < tanb < 1.9 is excluded for minimal scalar top mixing and m{top} < 175 GeV. More general scans of the MSSM parameter space are also considered.Comment: 49 pages.
